Nice weather for moles... agony for gardeners

10 September 2014 0 Comments Sheds
  • The warm, wet summer has been ideal for moles but a nightmare for gardeners, wildlife experts said yesterday.

Across the nation, mounds of earth are blighting carefully manicured lawns.

Nature lovers said it had been an ideal summer for moles. The furry creatures like the warm weather while the frequent showers have kept the soil moist, making it easier for them to feast on worms.

The floods over winter also contributed to a population explosion. David Relf, the director of mole trappers Beagle Garden Products, in Somerset, said the moles migrated to drier ground. Being bunched together, it was easier for them to find a mate, he said.

It is estimated that there are now as many as 40million moles in Britain.
